This month we’ll revisit the art and craft of digitizing real world documents and media. We’ll cover scanning your important documents. We’ll also cover converting your vinyl audio collection (remember vinyl? remember hair?). We should also have a short discussion of fair use with respect to the foregoing.

WWDC is the focus for June

The headline says it all. Apple has announced the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 along with a few other goodies. The hardware won’t be available until late June so we’ll look at the operating system enhancements of iOS 4 – previously styled iPhone OS.

Derek Dickerson plans to bring samples of the Drobo backup systems, too.

iWork for the iPad

This month we’ll look at the iWork suite of productivity software for the iPad. This is new ground for this kind of software. “Productivity” and the laid-back style of the iPad aren’t concepts you would normally group together in the same thought. We’ll find out how it works.

April is iPad Month

The wait is over. The iPad is released and appears to be selling like hotcakes. We’ll have at least one iPad to explore at the meeting – probably more. We know that at least two of our members have them. Dick Lennox will lead the charge, having ordered his within seconds of the opening of the pre-order process.

We’ll also cover the renewal of the MacBook Pro line. Units have reached retail outlets according to staff at The Mac Store.

Split Meeting Location

The meeting starts at 6:30 PM on Wednesday the 17th at the NEW LOCATION of The Mac Store. They are moving to Valley River Center, in the main corridor to the west of the food court. We will tour the new store location and EMUG members will enjoy a 5% discount on any purchase made during the tour. Dick Lennox will lead this segment of the meeting. Around 7:15 we will leave VRC and return to our normal meeting place at the Veterans Memorial Building.

Our friends at KLCC are making a special effort to get the word out on the split meeting. They are having a “cyber-day” (April 1) and Thon-Buster activities on April 1st. They are part of National Public Radio and deserve our support.

For those who miss the tour and show up at the Veterans location, Kerry Baird will host a Macintosh Mystery Hour from 6:30 PM until the return of the tour group. After this, we will take a first look at Quicken Essentials for Mac. As usual, discussions may range far and wide.

February is Fact Month

New Macs in November

October Meeting Notes

The Mac Mystery Hour produced some good stuff.

Protecting your content when you contemplate posting it on the net. Do you maintain ownership when you post to YouTube, etc? Don Macnaughtan from Lane Community College has posted information and guidelines in this regard.

Saving Microsoft Word documents. Use RTF format instead of the native Word format since RTF is more widely recognized.

VueScan is still one of the best scanner drivers around. Old scanner? No longer supported? New scanner with buggy drivers? Guess again! VueScan can sometimes give you access to features the manufacturer’s software can’t.

A discussion about recovering files from a backup after the theft of a Mac leads to this. PowerMax links to their Stolen Inventory Database. Enter a Mac’s serial number and you can see if it has been reported stolen. The key word, though, is reported.

Don Macnaughtan gave a demo of MacSpeech Dictate. We have three members currently using this product. They were all enthusiastic about the product. Check it out!
