August Picnic

This month well just relax and have a picnic. This meeting is open to members and their families and significant others. Members can also bring friends. We’ll light the grill at 5:30.

The place is Charnel Mulligan Park at 17th & Charnelton. That’s 2 blocks west of the Veterans’ Building where we normally meet. It’s a beautiful urban park with shaded eating space and lots of space for the kids to play. There’s a small market (Cornucopia) down the street if you forget anything and Safeway is 3 blocks away if you REALLY forget something.

EMUG will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, buns, condiments, soda and paper plates. Bring side dishes, chips or salad. Bring your own cutlery (We’ll have some spares available).

** In case of rain we’ll abandon the picnic and meet as usual at the Veterans Memorial Building.
Bring a friend and bring a smile!

OpenDNS

opendns

"OpenDNS makes the Internet experience safer, faster and smarter for you and everyone using your network."

I've been using this service for an entire day with great success, just about all issues I've had with Comcast in the past are as a result of DNS servers. Had I been using OpenDNS, all troubles could have been avoided.

Small and Useful

I’ve been meaning to introduce two pieces of software that I find to be incredibly small, yet so useful. Perhaps you’re a long time user, but if not, read on!

Have you ever wished you had seven desktops? Wish no more, and at no cost to you [Desktop Manager](http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/ “clikc me”) does just that. It delivers the convenience of multiple desktops to you in a form of virtual desktops that you can jump to via clicking, sliding, or at a stroke of a few keys. At any rate I give this Desktop Manager two thumbs up. Give it a chance and you’ll never look back!

Ever wish you had that latest and greatest [PowerBook](http://www.apple.com/powerbook/ “The one and only!”) with amazing new scrolling capabilities? I sure did, until I stumbled upon [iScroll2](http://www-users.kawo2.rwth-aachen.de/~razzfazz/ “scroll on over here”). I’ll spare you from my insightful commentary, but let me just say this, scrolling has never been this exciting!

Download, install and enjoy, you can thank me later!

Battery Exchange Program

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities, Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from October 2004 through May 2005 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. These batteries were manufactured by LG Chem, Ltd. of South Korea.

Coolest

Apple Mac OS X Tiger is chosen as gadget of the week by Time. Wilson Rothman writes:

You’ve heard all about Tiger, version 10.4 of Mac OS X. Coolest of the features are the “Widgets,” including calculator, calendar and language translator, that appear and disappear at the touch of a hotkey.

Trademark Dispute

A judge has denied a request by computer retailer TigerDirect for a preliminary injunction against Apple Computer over allegations that Apple’s nickname for its new operating system, “Tiger,” infringes on the retailer’s trademarked name.

The ruling was part of a 56 page opinion handed down on May 11th by Judge Joan Lenard of the United States District Court for the District of Florida. After weighing arguments from both sides, the Court found that “there is greater risk of damage to Apple from granting the injunction than any potential harm to TigerDirect from Apple’s use of Tiger marks.”
